The debate surrounding required Hotel Panic Buttons in Long Beach, California escalated in recent days. In 2016, the bill—what is known as Claudia's Law—demands hotel housekeeping staff safer working conditions. Councilwoman Jeannine Pearce publicly discussed Measure WW, the hotel panic button measure.

Last year Councilwoman Pearce and three other colleagues were unsuccessful in passing a previous version through city council in a 5-4 vote. However, last Tuesday the ordinance requiring hotel panic buttons moved closer to law. In a swing from last years tally, five members voted in favor of proceeding with the bill, while four simply walked out in protest.

Providing panic buttons to hotel housekeepers would be the logical next step. Working long hours in large facilities is not only strenuous physically, it is also dangerous. A 2016 poll reported that 89% of hotel housekeepers fall victim to sexual assault or harassment in their career. Many are under the assumption that offering this added security measure is too complicated, costly, and would require major construction. This is not the case. Hotel panic button systems are wireless and integrate seamlessly with existing systems.

Wireless hotel panic button systems are arranged to fit the needs of the establishment no matter the size. Housekeepers can wear a simple neck pendant that relays to hotel security location in a time of duress with one push of a button. Wall mounted vandal resistant push buttons are also an option providing guests and other staff with the same ability to notify hotel security of any situation.
