The R5KSSTF is usually mounted in staff locations where staff members are working. The station may also be used in residential areas such as therapy rooms or visitor lounges.

The station provides communication to its covering console(s) via the call-in push button. The station may also be used for audio monitoring of a designated area.

The station is connected to its associated corridor light or domeless controller and is continuously supervised for station presence. A "Trouble" message will also annunciate at the covering console(s) if the station is removed from the system or becomes non-functional.
