UL1069 Standard for Hospital Signaling and Nurse Call Equipment
- ►2.6.1 - "The fundamental operation of a nurse call system (NCS) shall include essential/required operation whose primary function is to provide notification and/or reset/cancellation of a staff-initiated or patient/initiated call signal to alert the staff."
- 1) Call annunciation at a nurse’s station (audible and visual)
- 2) Call annunciation at the dome light (visual)
- 3) Call placed indicator on the patient station (visual)
- 4) Zone annunciation (audible and visual)
- 5) Call reset/cancellation
Normal Operation (Chapter 17)
- ► 100% of the calls must be displayed at the nurse’s station or central annunciator. If not, the system shall display high priority calls in lieu of or in addition to routine calls.
- ► Remote pendant controls (like call cords) extending from wall units (bedside stations) must indicate (visual and audible) unintentional removal at the nurse’s station.
- ► There shall be no loss of routine, emergency, or code calls while a signaling unit is energized by a standby power source and is operated under normal and signaling conditions.
- ► Code calls must have a distinctive audible and visual signal at the master station. Silencing of the audible signal must not result in the de-energization of the associated light (flashing or steady).
Call Station Annunciation (Chapter 17)
- ► Nurse call station activation shall result in an audible and visual signal at the primary nurse call annunciator.
- ► The visual annunciation (LED) shall identify the source of the call.
- ► The visual annunciation shall be maintained continuously until the nurse call station is reset manually.
- ► The audible annunciation shall be at least 3 seconds duration for a continuous annunciation and repeated every 10 seconds for a pulsing type annunciation.
- ► Every call point covered by portable nurse control stations must also be covered by a primary nurse control station.
- ►2.6.2 All calls can only be cancelled at the originating patient station or room of origin.
- ►2.6.3 "Where the nurse call system allows remote call cancellation only when the audio communication connection is established end-to-end and verified prior to hanging up, establishing the audio communication is considered to be a supplemental operation."
- ►18.1.2 A trouble signal shall be distinguishable from all nurse call signals and shall be indicated by operation of a sounding appliance. If the audible signal is silenced there must be a visual indicator. The audible trouble signal shall sound if the switch is in its silenced position and no trouble exists.
- ►18.1.4 The fuses in a code call circuit and a centralized system control unit shall be electrically supervised to indicate rupture of a fuse. If the rupture prevents intended operation of the unit an audible trouble signal must sound.
More Electrical Supervision
- ►49.1 The maximum time from the occurrence of a fault or adverse condition in any communication path or equivalent during annunciation or idle time, or the restoration of the fault or adverse condition to normal shall be 90 seconds.
- ►49.1.2 The time from initiating a call until it is displayed at a primary nurse control station shall not exceed 15 seconds. The time from the initiation of a trouble signal until it is displayed at the primary nurse control station shall not exceed 90 seconds.

► The minimum field wiring size must be 22 AWG
► The wire size to be employed shall be suitable for the current-carrying capacity of the circuit application
► The terminal configuration shall not be used for leads intended to be removed for testing
